Dynamic Containment (DC), which helps to manage grid frequency at timescales of under a second, a new landmark for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the UK and other markets that will follow this paradigm. Since its launch in October 2020, Dynamic Containment has paid an average of £17.0MW/hr, almost three times higher than the average Fast Frequency Response (FFR) prices over the same period.

Compared to FFR, DC extends the boundaries for which little or no response is required, while decreasing the response time required from assets posing possibly the most stringent criteria of any service in which batteries can participate globally. The service also calls for the hourly submission of Performance Reporting data to ESO measured at 20Hz resolution on top of the Operational Metering data that is provided every second directly to the ESO control room.

UNITY Storage Power Plant Controller (S-PPC) meets all the requirements of this service and is currently enabling storage assets to provide it seamlessly after winning the related daily auctions. The addition of DC in our S-PPC capabilities provides another important opportunity to maximize the BESS revenues via active and reactive power revenue stacking and dispatch scheduling.
